The deceased has been identified as Muthuwadige Sathsara Nimesh, a resident of Meegahakivula, Badulla. According to reports, he was arrested by Welikada Police officers on April 1st. His death has sparked allegations of police brutality, as sources indicate that he succumbed to injuries sustained due to mistreatment while in custody.
His mother, who visited the Welikada Police Station yesterday (April 2nd), discovered that her son’s clothing had been removed, and his trousers were found discarded in a nearby trash can. When she inquired about the incident, officers reportedly informed her that her son had attempted to suicide.
In response to the incident, the Committee to Protect the Rights of Prisoners (CPRP) has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to conduct an immediate and transparent investigation into the death. The organization has also demanded that legal action be taken against those found responsible.
This case has once again highlighted concerns over police accountability and human rights violations in Sri Lanka, with activists calling for urgent reforms to prevent further custodial deaths.
