Alleged Police Brutality in Midigama: Young Man Claims Assault and False Drug Charges

D.Nipun Mahinsa, 23 years old, is a resident of Weligama. On 16th September 2024 at around 8.00 pm, he was staying with six other people at his relative’s house and playing cards for money. At that time, six police officers came and arrested all of them.

All of them were taken to the Midigama Police Station and put in jail on the grounds that a ganja case would be filed against them. There, the officer named Saman Lal took the national identity card of the youth named Nipun Mahinsa and when the young man told him to give his identity card to his mother, the police officer hit him on the cheek and scolded him. Also, other officials brutally beat this young man with a cricket bat, a wicket stick and a stick. At that time, he also saw another person being handcuffed and hanging. Later, around 1.00 midnight, five police officers came to the place drunk and one of them came and said “I. Together with the one who asked for the D. He was then handcuffed and beaten by the officers. The next day he was told that he would not be granted bail and that a drug (powder) case would be filed.

Accordingly, on the 17th they were all produced in court whereupon they were all charged with possession of kanza. At that time, all of them pleaded not guilty and the trial was set for October 3rd and then postponed until next January 2nd. Also, this young man was admitted to Matara Base Hospital on the 18th to receive medical treatment for two days.
