Alleged Police Misconduct: A Shocking Incident of Violence and Threats in Kalabada

On November 21, 2024, around 7 PM, a person attended a party at a friend’s house in his area. After the party ended and everyone dispersed, a personal confrontation occurred between him and his friend.

During this confrontation, the friend came with a machete intending to attack him. Madushaan took the machete and was walking home on the Kalabada Road when a person suddenly appeared in front of him, claiming to be from the police. Madushaan dropped the machete in his hand and raised his hands, at which point the police officers shot him.

The sound of gunfire attracted several villagers who gathered and criticized the police. The police then chased and beat several people in the area. The person who was shot escaped into the forest and went to his home. The police subsequently went to his house, verbally abused his wife, and threatened to kill him if he did not appear before dawn, also searching the house.

When he subsequently hid in the forest behind his house, the police went to his father’s house, verbally abused and threatened his father, saying they would kill him if he did not appear before dawn.

At this point, he quietly called 119 from behind the house in the forest, reporting the incident and that the police had also attacked his father. He asked his friends and relatives to take him to Embilipitiya Hospital, but since he had wounds, they all refused to take him to the police and instead surrounded the entire village.

Accordingly, he contacted the Kuttugala Police officers and the 1990 ambulance. After both parties arrived at the location, he handed over the wounds to the Kuttugala Police officer and was taken to Embilipitiya Hospital by ambulance.

Later at the hospital, he was arrested by the police. The gunshot wounded below his ear, causing serious damage to the carotid artery. He also suffered injuries to his lower back.

The police claim they did not shoot him and that his leg injuries were from a bottle neck, and the neck injury was from a blow. However, according to him and the doctor at Ratnapura Hospital, the injuries were indeed from gunshot wounds.
