Four Senior Police Officers Face Court Over Brutal Custody Torture in Malimbada

Four police officers, including inspectors from the Malimbada Police Station, have been arrested and presented with indictments at the Matara High Court for allegedly brutally and inhumanely assaulting a young man who was taken into custody four years ago. The High Court Judge has ordered the police to release them on strict bail conditions and to appear again on the 28th.

The case involves the arrest and cruel assault of 27-year-old Dilshan Madushanka, who was detained for six days at both Malimbada and Matara police stations based on false intelligence about a robbery in the Thelijjawila area.

The Matara High Court states that four lawyers, including former Attorney General Sanjaya Rajaratnam, appeared for the suspects.

The victims have expressed their gratitude to the new government’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the Presidential Secretary, the Presidential Secretariat office, and all those who supported in providing necessary instructions to reopen the case file that had been pending in the Attorney General’s Department without investigation for four years.

There is significant public discussion regarding the fact that no one has been arrested for the murder of innocent youth Mindika Aluthgamage, who was killed by a misfired bullet, and about the appearance of four lawyers including former Attorney General Sanjaya Rajaratnam for the court proceedings.

The suspects released on Rs. 25,000 bail and strict conditions by Matara High Court Judge A.M.N.P. Amarasinghe are:

  • Former Malimbada OIC and current Tangalle Crime Investigation Division OIC, Chief Inspector P.K. Chandra Jayawikrama from Deiyandara, Matara
  • Former Matara Police Crime Investigation Division OIC and current Weeraketiya Police OIC, Inspector Nuwan Buddhika Wijethunga from Hitiketiya, Dikwella
  • Former Malimbada Police Crime Investigation Division OIC and current Kamburupitiya Police Crime Investigation Division OIC, Inspector Samantha Wijsekara from Kapuduwa, Thihagoda
  • Former Malimbada Police officer Saman Jayawardena from Palatuwa, Malimbada

Rupa Pathiranage, the mother of Dilshan Madushanka, stated to the media that she hopes the current government’s law will also be implemented in the case of Mindika Aluthgamage, who was mistakenly killed with seven bullets from a Type M pistol.
