In a shocking turn of events, the demise of businessman Govindhasami Krishnakumar while in custody has sparked a series of unanswered questions and raised concerns about the circumstances leading to his arrest and subsequent tragic end.
Dhanapalan Sivashankar, the brother of the deceased, filed a formal complaint, expressing deep distress over the sequence of events that unfolded. Krishnakumar, a businessman from the Ragala region, faced financial challenges due to the economic downturn exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Legal proceedings were initiated against him by a businessman from Negombo, leading to a court-issued arrest warrant.
Two police officers from Negombo, accompanied by the businessman’s helper, traveled to Ragala to execute the warrant on November 23, 2023. They informed Krishnakumar’s family about the warrant and requested them to accompany the officers to the Nuwara Eliya prison. However, on November 24, when one of Krishnakumar’s siblings visited the prison, he was told that Krishnakumar was not there and directed to Badulla instead.
The plot thickened on November 25, 2023, when two Ragala policemen arrived at Krishnakumar’s house with the devastating news that he had allegedly taken his own life by hanging in the Negombo prison. The sudden and tragic turn of events has left the family in shock and disbelief.
Upon arriving at the Negombo police station, Dhanapalan Sivashankar and Krishnakumar’s wife were subjected to inquiries. A judge arrived at the hospital at 3:30 pm, examined the body, and gathered details from those involved. Subsequent investigations, however, raised suspicions, especially regarding the alleged method of suicide.
Dhanapalan Sivashankar, expressing concern for his brother’s safety, requested a thorough inspection of the prison. Despite suspicions and doubts surrounding the circumstances, the doctor declared Krishnakumar’s death as a suicide after a two-hour investigation.
The family is now grappling with a myriad of questions, ranging from the arrest procedure and the involvement of an individual reportedly affiliated with Negombo’s business interests to the abrupt change in destination and the assertion of Krishnakumar’s alleged mental infirmity. Doubts linger over the plausibility of Krishnakumar orchestrating his own demise and the origin of bloodstains discovered on his person.
The family demands a thorough and impartial investigation into the entire incident, emphasizing the need for clarity on the events leading to Krishnakumar’s arrest, the subsequent investigations, and the circumstances surrounding his tragic death. Dhanapalan Sivashankar seeks justice for his brother and urges authorities to address the lingering uncertainties to ensure accountability and transparency in this troubling case.
